JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has restricted the login feature on the Wikipedia website since February. Now, the restriction has been expanded on the Wikimedia Commons website.

According to Wikipedia's statement, under the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), the blocking of the Wikimedia Commons site was carried out on March 25. This blocking is still related to WMF which has not registered as a Private Scope Electronic System Operator (PSE).

The two policies that Komdigi implemented are considered to hinder the ability of contributors. The reason is that they will not be able to edit or create new articles on Wikipedia or other projects under the auspices of Wikimedia.

"Limiting log access for Wikimedians (Wikipedia contributors) will make it difficult for them to update the content of Wikipedia articles to remain reliable," Wikipedia wrote on its official website, reported on Friday, March 27.

In addition to hindering long-time contributors, blocking authentication subdomains also prevents new users who want to join as contributors. The process of registering an account on Wikipedia is now impossible for people in Indonesia.

"This will cause most Wikimedians from Indonesia to change from content creators to mere content consumers," Wikipedia explained.

Seeing this situation, the contributors asked the government to immediately lift the blocking. They hope that an educational digital space will remain open without administrative obstacles that harm the community.

"(we ask Komdigi to) lift the blocking of the Wikimedia Authentication site and the Wikimedia Commons site, and no longer take similar actions or restrictions in the future," Wikipedia said. "This access restriction does not benefit readers in Indonesia."
