JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, emphasized that the data and digital content of the Indonesian people are now an important foundation in the development of global artificial intelligence.

According to him, every digital activity, from location, conversations, to social media uploads, becomes a trace that is processed into high-value business models and AI models.

"Global platforms such as Google, Meta, and TikTok collect and process data on a large scale. The data is then used for the development of big data-based technology and artificial intelligence," he said, quoted Tuesday, March 3.

Seeing the importance of data, which is now used as the main raw material for artificial intelligence, Nezar emphasized the role of the state to ensure that its economic rights and values are not lost.

However, he also reminded that the problem does not stop at the protection of personal data. Public content, including journalistic works and academic writings, also has the potential to be used to train AI machines without fair mechanisms.

He cited the example of The New York Times limiting access to its content because it was used to train AI systems such as OpenAI.

Nezar said the dispute showed that the style of writing and the content of news had economic value and intellectual property rights.

"If it is not regulated, the works of Indonesian journalists, academics, and creators can become the material for global AI training without a clear agreement. The added value is enjoyed by other parties," said Nezar.

Therefore, the Ministry of Communication and Digital has reviewed the national regulatory framework to be able to respond to new technological challenges, including artificial intelligence.

Not to forget, the government is also studying data governance practices from the European Union which places the protection of citizens' rights as a priority in digital regulation.
