Apple introduced a new age verification system. The tool, which will be used in several countries, will help Apple limit access to adult apps for underage users.
The company explained that they began implementing an age verification system on Tuesday, February 24. This step was also taken to comply with increasingly strict legal regulations on child protection on digital platforms.
"(Age verification will help developers) meet their age-verification obligations under upcoming US and regional laws, including in Brazil, Australia, Singapore, Utah, and Louisiana," Apple explained, quoted on Wednesday, February 25.
In Brazil, this policy also targets applications that have loot box or random purchase features in the game. Apple will automatically change the application category to 18+ to protect users from potential early gambling risks.
The US technology company provides a so-called Age Range API for app developers. Through this system, developers can get accurate signals about the age category of users without violating privacy.
Similar regulations will also be imposed in several US regions, including Utah and Louisiana. In Utah, underage users will be required to link their accounts to a parent's account to gain access to certain applications.
This latest API is even able to provide notifications if an app update requires parental or guardian approval. This is intended to allow developers to independently and transparently meet their legal obligations in each region.
