JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Digital encourages the strengthening of ASEAN regional collaboration to face the challenges of disinformation and deepfake content in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).
Director General of Digital Ecosystems at the Ministry of Communications, Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, said that one of the collaborations that needed to be built was the harmonization of AI-based content detection and labeling standards across countries.
According to him, AI-based content labeling is considered very crucial to maintain public trust and the integrity of the broadcasting ecosystem in the region.
"We need a mechanism that can be operated throughout ASEAN to detect and mark deepfakes. Because we know, a fragmented regulatory landscape only benefits perpetrators of crimes," Edwin said in his statement quoted Friday, February 6.
Edwin emphasized that the development of AI should not be seen merely as a disruption, but as a great power that needs to be strategically integrated.
However, this integration must be followed by regulations that protect public interests and humanitarian values. Because if not, AI will cause a lot of disinformation.
"This AI is very powerful, it can't be fought. Although AI carries dangers, there are many benefits that can be accepted and what is needed is strategic integration with clear governance so that technology can really serve the community," said Edwin.
In the national context, Edwin emphasized that Indonesia does not allow the digital space to be a lawless territory. Komdigi has required digital platforms to implement systems that can protect children and prevent the spread of hoax content.
"We also encourage global platforms to provide AI content detection and labeling tools to protect the public," he said.
