JAKARTA - HTC officially introduced its latest artificial intelligence (AI) powered smart glasses called Vive Eagle in Hong Kong. This is a strategic move to seize market share in the rapidly growing wearable device industry.

The Taiwanese company is betting on an open platform approach that allows users to freely choose the AI model they want to use, including Google's Gemini and OpenAI's technology.

This step directly differentiates the Vive Eagle from its main competitors such as Meta which uses the closed Meta AI system. Likewise with Chinese brands such as Xiaomi and Alibaba which are generally tied to domestic AI models.

Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing at HTC, Charles Huang, stated that the decision to use an open platform was taken because of the very rapid development of AI. However, it requires very large resources, so utilizing the power of existing platforms is considered much more effective than building a closed ecosystem.

Apart from technological flexibility, HTC also emphasizes the aspect of privacy and data security as the main selling point. The company guarantees that user data will not be used to train their AI models. This is a step that positions HTC as an alternative for consumers who are concerned about data management practices on smart devices owned by competitors.

In terms of design, the glasses, which are priced at around 3,988 Hong Kong dollars in Hong Kong, are specially designed with "Asian fit" in mind to make them more comfortable for consumers in Asia. Especially considering that many similar products on the market today still use Western size standards.

After the initial launch in Hong Kong, HTC plans to bring the Vive Eagle to the Japanese and Southeast Asian markets in the first quarter of next year, before eventually expanding into the European and US markets by the end of 2026.

HTC's aggressive return to the consumer hardware market comes amid a surge in global shipments of smart glasses that reached 110 percent in the first half of this year. Although Meta currently dominates the market with a share of 73 percent, HTC is optimistic that the combination of freedom of choice for AI platforms, ergonomic design for Asian users, and a strong commitment to privacy protection will be the main attraction for new users around the world.
