JAKARTA Samsung announced its latest partnership with SK Telecom, South Korea's largest wireless telecommunications company. Both companies will develop 6G core technology.
The focus of this development is the Artificial Intelligence-based Radio Access Network (AI-RAN). This joint research will be represented by Samsung Research and the Telecom SK Network Technology Office.
As long as this collaboration goes on, the two companies will develop and test some key technologies for 6G networks. These include Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based channel estimation, distributed multi-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission, AI-RAN-based scheduler, and core network architecture.
AI-based channel estimation will predict and correct signal transmission in real time. This allows faster and more accurate data delivery, especially in challenging environments such as buildings or walls.
The company will also focus on distributed MIMO technology which is a change from traditional single base station architectures. With this new approach, several base or antenna stations will work together to transmit and receive data.

Meanwhile, AI-RAN schedulers and AI-based core networks are key because this technology can determine when, where, and how data is sent. This will ensure resource allocation remains efficient, even when multiple devices are simultaneously connected.
In this partnership, Samsung Research will focus on developing AI-RAN technology models, including distributed AI, scheduler, and MIMO-based channel estimates. Meanwhile, SKT will lead the provision of data and testing infrastructure management using its national network operations.
"Through field-focused collaboration with SKT, we will be able to verify the effectiveness of AI-based wireless technology in real-world settings and secure key AI-RAN technologies from an early age," said Jin Guk Jeong, Samsung Executive Vice President of Research.
