JAKARTA Apple will expand its satellite-based Emergency SOS feature for iPhone and Apple Watch Ultra users. The first country to get this important feature is Mexico.

Launching from 9to5mac, this feature will come from the end of the year, but there is no specific time for its launch. The presence of this feature will complement Apple's existing satellite connectivity services in Mexico, namely Find My via satellite and Messages via satellite.

Satellite-based Emergency SOS is an important feature for iOS users. They can send text messages to emergency services when they are outside the reach of a cellular signal or Wi-Fi. This can help users who are in a state of urgency.

Not only reaching emergency services, but this firm can also be used to notify emergency contacts, such as close friends or family. That way, other people can know the user's condition as soon as possible.

Since its first launch with the iPhone 14 in 2022, this feature has proven successful in saving many lives. So far, satellite-based Emergency SOS features can only be used in the United States, Canada, and most parts of Europe.

It's important to note that this feature can only be used on the iPhone 14 model or later versions, including the latest iPhone 17 series, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 3. This feature will be activated automatically when users try to call or send SMS to emergency services in areas without connections.

When connected, the device will display a questionnaire to collect important information about the state of emergency experienced. Then, the iOS interface will guide users to direct their devices to connect with passing satellites.

A response from the satellite was then sent to Apple's training relay center in charge of contacting the local emergency service on behalf of the user. This process will ensure important information is immediately submitted to the rescue team.

Emergency SOS service via satellite is provided free of charge for two years after device activation. The company recently extended this free period for iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users.
