JAKARTA - California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a state law, requiring OpenAI and other big players to disclose how they plan to reduce the potential risks of their AI model.
Newsom insists that California is home to leading AI companies including OpenAI, and with this law, it seeks to lead industry regulations that are important to its economy.
Called the Senate Bill 53, Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act (TFAIA), the regulation initiated by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) is designed to improve online security by setting reasonable limits in the development of AI models.
"California has proven that we can set regulations to protect the community while ensuring the growing AI industry continues to advance. This legislation balances the two," Newsom said in a press release.
Through this law, California continues to build technology leadership and create an industry-supporting environment and growing talent.
The state balances efforts to encourage AI with laws that are natural to protect the public, embrace technology in order to facilitate life and make governance more efficient, effective, and transparent.
"With this law, California is again appearing as a global leader in technological innovation as well as safety," Senator Scott Wiener added.

Earlier this year, a group of world-leading academics and AI experts were gathered at the request of the Governor of Newsom to release the first report in the US about a reasonable AI guardrail.
The report contains recommendations for making evidence-based policies, balancing transparency needs with security risk considerations, and determining the appropriate level of regulation in this fast-growing field.
SB 53 responded to the recommendation of the report and confirmed California's position as AI leader. SB 53 is expected to be a model that can be followed by other countries.
