Director General Of Komdigi: Online Gambling Is Difficult To Eradicate Because There Is A Demand From The Community

JAKARTA - Director General of Digital Space Supervision of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Alexander Sabar emphasized that eradicating online gambling is not enough just by blocking content and technology.

Although technological developments are one of the main factors for online gambling is difficult to eradicate, there are two other factors that follow it, namely procedures and people or the community itself.

"So this is indeed a broad spectrum. Technology continues to develop, we are trying to keep up with the technological developments. Procedures have been set, legal rules already exist. But once again, the procedure is always lagging behind technological developments," Alex said at his press conference on Wednesday, September 17.

In addition, he also explained that the root of the main problem that is the challenge of eradicating online gambling is also located in the high demand (demand) in the community.

"It's not that we want to blame our society, but this is a fact that happened. If we look at the principles of development or people creating online gambling sites, because there is demand, there is demand in society," said Alex.

He also added, This is like there is a need and there are those who meet that need. And it continues to grow.

However, Alex emphasized that Komdigi would not back down from facing this challenge. The government continues to cooperate with digital platforms, law enforcement officials, as well as relevant ministries and institutions.

In addition, the public is also asked to play an active role by reporting online gambling content found through the official Komdigi channel and the complaint channel of their respective platforms.

"This is not to silence criticism or the aspirations of the people. We will maintain democracy. What we take firm action is illegal and dangerous content, one of which is online gambling," he said.

From October 20, 2024 to September 16, 2025, Komdigi has processed more than 2.1 million online gambling content to be lowered from Indonesia's digital space.
