Disinformation Content Rises, Komdigi Call TikTok And Meta

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) revealed that they had summoned Meta Platforms, the company that oversees Facebook to WhatsApp, and TikTok.

This summons was made to address disinformation content or fake news circulating on their platform. This plan was revealed after the community demonstrated on Monday, August 25.

Angga Raka Prabowo, Deputy Minister of Komdigi, said that this disinformation had angered and sparked public protests. Based on Komdigi's monitoring, this disinformation content is widely circulated on TikTok and Instagram.

Through this summons, the government urged Meta and TikTok to act more proactively. These two multinational tech companies are expected to moderate and remove harmful content on their platforms in the near future.

The removal of this content includes not only disinformation content, but also pornography, and online gambling. Angga emphasized that the removal of the malicious content needed to be done without waiting for an official request from the government.

Angga emphasized that the platform must comply with the rules in force in Indonesia. If this is not obeyed, these companies will receive sanctions, ranging from simple warnings to platform blocking.

"They must comply with the rules because our goal is to protect this country. Sanctions in the regulation include warnings, fines, temporary suspension, revocation of access, or even removal from the list of registered electronic platforms," Angga said.

Angga gave an example of disinformation content which was considered disturbing. For example, a video of Finance Minister Sri Mulyani stating that teachers are a burden on the state. In addition, there were also videos of riots in the past that were shared again as if they had just happened.

This video is circulating a lot to anger the post-demonstration community. TikTok and Meta will meet with Komdigi this weekend. Komdigi also plans to invite representatives from X and YouTube to the meeting.
