JAKARTA - OpenAI plans to take part in online product sales through ChatGPT by integrating the payment system directly into the chatbot. This was first reported by the Financial Times on Wednesday, July 16, citing several sources familiar with the plan. Traders who process orders through this system will pay the commission to OpenAI.

This move allows OpenAI to take advantage of high-speed ChatGPT user traffic as a new source of revenue, alongside their traditional subscription model.

This payment feature is still under development. However, OpenAI and partners such as the Shopify e-commerce platform have presented the initial version of this system to brands and discussed financial provisions.

OpenAI declined to comment, while Shopify did not respond to requests for comment from the media.

The two companies previously announced partnerships earlier this year, shortly after OpenAI launched an upgraded shopping feature to better showcase products and reviews.

Currently, OpenAI displays the recommended products in ChatGPT via a link that directs users to online retailing websites.

Earlier this year, OpenAI announced that their annual revenue rate jumped to $10 billion in June, up from $5.5 billion in December 2024. However, the company led by Sam Altman recorded a loss of about $5 billion last year.
