JAKARTA US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox News broadcast on Sunday 29 June that he had found potential buyers for the short video app TikTok.
He described the buyer as a group of very rich people, but had not disclosed their identities and promised to announce them in about two weeks.
Trump made the statement on the "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo" program on Fox News. He added that the agreement being developed most likely required approval from China, and he expects Chinese President Xi Jinping to agree.
Earlier this month, President Trump extended a deadline of September 17 for China-based parent company TikTok, ByteDance, to release TikTok's assets in the US, despite previous legislation setting an earlier deadline, and requiring sale or closure if no significant progress.
Previously, plans have been discussed this spring to separate TikTok operations in the United States from being a new US-based company and majority owned and operated by local investors. However, the plan was delayed after China said it would not agree, especially after Trump announced a high tariff on goods from China.

"We already have buyers for TikTok," Trump said. I think we will need approval from China. And I think President Xi will likely agree.
The US law in 2024 requires TikTok to stop its operations in the US no later than January 19, 2025, unless ByteDance has completed divestment of TikTok assets in the US or shows significant progress towards sales.
Trump, who claims that TikTok helped him gain support from young voters in the November 2024 elections, has extended the deadline three times.
