JAKARTA - Nvidia and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced a collaboration with the Leibniz Supercomputing Center to build a new supercomputer that uses Nvidia's newest generation chips.

The supercomputer, dubbed "Blue Lion", is planned to begin to be used by scientists in early 2027, relying on the Nvidia Vera Rubin chip.

The announcement was made at a supercomputation conference in Hamburg, Germany, following the news that Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in the United States will also build a similar system with Nvidia chips next year.

In addition, Nvidia also announced that "Jupiter", a supercomputer that uses Nvidia chips in Forschungszentrum Julich, Germany's national research institute, has officially become the fastest system in Europe.

This collaboration shows the efforts of European institutions to remain competitive against the United States in the development of supercomputers used for various scientific fields, from biotechnology to climate research.

Prior to becoming the center of artificial intelligence (AI), Nvidia had tried to convince scientists to use its chips in accelerating the resolution of complex computing problems, such as modeling climate change which required a lot of precision calculations and could take months.

Now, Nvidia also invites scientists to use AI. The AI system can take advantage of several precision calculations to make predictions that, although not as accurate as the full calculation results, remain useful and much faster.

In a press conference, Dion Harris, head of marketing of Nvidia data center products, introduced an AI model called "Climate in a Bottle". With this model, researchers can include some initial conditions such as sea surface temperature and produce weather forecasts for the next 10 to 30 years, with details per kilometer on the earth's surface.

"Today the researchers will use a combined approach between classical physics and AI to unravel the turbulent flow of the atmosphere," Harris said, quoted by VOI from Reuters. "This technique will allow them to analyze thousands of scenarios in more detail than ever before."
