JAKARTA Worldcoin, the cryptocurrency initiative, has been a hot topic of conversation over the past few weeks in the country. The reason is, the project founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman collects biometric data.

The project, which has been temporarily frozen by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), was also highlighted by the Chairman of the Indonesian Internet Domain Name Management (PANDI) John Sihar Simanjuntak. According to John, the main problem with Worldcoin is licensing.

John said that blockchain has been widely used lately, but there needs to be strict regulations behind it. Worldcoin is also said to have not registered as an Electronic System Operator (PSE), even though this company is actively operating in Indonesia.

"Like in the past, the internet was born in a process. There are standards that need to be obeyed," John told reporters when met on Thursday, May 15. "World is not comply with regulations. It's dangerous, yes, if there is data (community) that is stored."

John also explained that PANDI also adopted a Web2 or DID protocol based on W3C Consortium, but they never stored user data. Therefore, it is not surprising that Komdigi temporarily revokes the PSE Worldcoin.

Whatever data Worldcoin stores, including shifting public data, the company must communicate with Komdigi. After all, Worldcoin is a foreign company that needs to follow domestic government regulations.

"In my opinion, first solve (the problem) with Komdigi. It needs to be discussed," explained John. The chairman of PANDI also said that the issue of Worldcoin needs to be discussed in depth so that the government can determine the right solution in protecting public data.

Worldcoin Takes Community Biometric Data

The presence of Worldcoin is being debated. Some people believe that their data is safe because the company only scans eye slices, but not a few also claim to be worried about leaked user data.

Even though it's just a scanning eye slice, this is a matter of concern. Many tech experts have said that this action is dangerous because eye slices are part of a biometric system.

Biometrics is a verification system that takes advantage of user identities and is more private because it does not use passwords. Biometrics rely on the user's physical characteristics, including faces and eye slices.

Therefore, the collection of eye slices is quite worrying. As a cryptocurrency project, Worldcoin utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology. This crypto is different from the others for offering tokens without funds at the beginning.

If you want to register with Worldcoin, users must have WorldID. They need to visit the Orb centers in several countries to seek eye slices. After that, the scan results will provide a unique code for digital passports.

However, according to news circulating in recent weeks, Worldcoin has invited many people to register. Not just register, they need to scan eye slices. After that, they will be paid at a varying cost.
