Google Will Prevent Unknown App Downloads During Calls On Android 16

JAKARTA Google introduced advanced security features for Android-based phones. This feature called Advanced Protection was introduced on the Android Show on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

As the name implies, this feature is designed to secure user phones from various crimes. Basically, Advanced Protection is a security mode that combines the Offline Device Key feature, Theft Detection, and Play Protect.

Google confirmed that this security mode will be available on Android 16 in June. With this feature, users will not avoid fraudulent acts because they will be prohibited from sideloading or downloading third parties.

"You're a public figure or you just want the best advanced Android security features, you can enable Advanced Protection for peace of mind that you're protected from the most advanced threat," explains Google.

This ban not only applies to apps downloaded via browsers, but also app downloads from unknown sources. Downloads will not run when the user makes a phone call with anyone.

This feature is an attempt to prevent phishing actions. Users are often deceived by various modes, including phishing methods involving phone calls. Therefore, Google is developing a feature that can prevent its crimes.

If Advanced Protection is active, cybercriminals will not be able to persuade Android users to download malicious apps on their phones. They also can't change any important settings as long as phone calls run.

Advanced Protection isn't the only form of phishing prevention on Android. Google will also roll out other features that can prevent action to open banking apps during active phone calls.

Users are also prohibited from sharing their screens using third-party apps during calls. This feature is being tested in several countries and Google has confirmed that its features will also be available on Android 16.
