HoYoverse Will Implement Age Verification On The Genshin Impact App In The US

JAKARTA Genshin Impact, a video game app from HoYoverse, was forced to apply age verification. This policy will be implemented in the near future for players in US territory.

This policy is a settlement of a lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) some time ago. The HoYoverse was sued by the Commission because one of the elements of its game could damage children's psychology, namely the gacha system.

The company that oversees many video games has been fined USD 20 million (IDR 330 billion) in January. Now, HoYoverse must implement the age verification process no later than July.

Through the Genshin update page, HoYoverse said that the age verification process will be launched on May 20 and users must confirm their age no later than July 18. This action must be taken because the impact is the suspension of accounts,

"If verification is not completed before July 20, 2026, your HoYoverse account's personal information will be permanently deleted," the company said, quoted on Thursday, May 8.

With the implementation of this policy, children can still do gacha, but they will be prohibited from spending money to buy Primomem. This prohibition applies to children under the age of 16. Meanwhile, accounts under 13 will be deleted.

The Gapha System Is Prohibited For Children

Gaha, as short as a gachapon, which comes from Japanese, is a system of games that relies on concentration. Users need to spend money in certain amounts to get random prizes.

This is applied in Genshin Impact. Basically, this application can be used for free. Users need to issue Primomem, premium currency in Genshin, to get certain characters or weapons.

Primomem is obtained by exploring the entire area of Teyvat, but this currency collection often makes players frustrated. Not a few spend real money on Primogems because they are lazy to explore Teyvat.

This system is the problem with the FTC. HoYoverse, especially Genshin Impact, does not set limits on its users in doing the gacha. Anyone can do this, even for children who are not 18 years old.
