JAKARTA The DeepSek application update has been suspended in South Korea due to security concerns. The suspension was carried out on February 15, 2025, following blocking regulations for the application.
This action was expressed by the South Korean data protection authority on Monday, February 17. This suspension was also carried out after DeepSekrecognized that they failed to apply protection against users' personal data.
With the blocking of DeepSek's latest downloads, people who have already downloaded and used the application will not be able to update the application. Local authorities are doing this so that the population data is not misused by DeepSek.
However, DeepSeek websites can still be accessed in the country. That way, if local people want to use DeepSek with improved features or performance, they can open the official website developed by DeepSek.
This suspension will continue until DeepSek fixes their application. The Chinese Artificial Intelligence (AI) model must follow privacy laws in the country. Otherwise, their app will not be accessible in South Korea.
DeepSek has yet to provide any statement regarding the issue of data protection. However, citing Reuters, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Korea said that the Chinese government has always prioritized data privacy and security.

Korea is not the only country to block the app. After being popular because it is able to compete with ChatGPT, this application gets the spotlight. According to many experts in various countries, DeepSek does not protect its user data.
In fact, the company is accused of overusing its user chat history. Recently, Italian data protection authorities Garante also ordered DeepSek to block their chatbot apps from their country due to similar problems.
