JAKARTA - Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, reiterated that the policy they are currently working on is not a restriction on access to social media use, but a restriction on the creation of social media accounts for children.

"What happened was not a restriction on access to social media, but a restriction on access to children's accounts on social media," explained Meutya at the Kemkomdigi Working Meeting (Raker) with Commission I DPR on Tuesday, February 4.

Meutya admitted that she had met and discussed with the Australian Minister in charge of limiting the use of social media for children under 16 there.

According to him, Australia's policy does not become a reference, but Komdigi tries to formulate a rule that is distinctive and in accordance with Indonesian society.

"In principle, if the child is accompanied by his parents, using his parents' accounts to open social media, that's okay. We uphold democracy," he said.

The Minister of Trade emphasized that this policy would not violate the freedom of expression from children.

According to him, the policy related to the ban on the use of social media is not the domain of Komdigi. Even Komdigi also cannot supervise the use of social media by children directly.

"The realm of Komdigi is to regulate the technology. So there must be technology that the platform has that can check that children are 15 years old, cannot enter (social media)," he concluded.

He also added, "Even if there are rules, for example the prohibition of parents from giving their cellphones (to their children), yes, it is very difficult to carry out surveillance. So we also want to make rules that we can monitor."
