JAKARTA - WhatsApp has started rolling out an update that allows iPad users to create an account directly from the device without having to first connect it to an iPhone or other device. This feature eliminates one of the biggest limitations of the WhatsApp application for iPad since it was first launched in 2025.
Previously, WhatsApp for iPad relied on the linked device system. Users are required to have an active WhatsApp account on another device before they can use the application on the Apple tablet.
Through the latest update, users can now register directly from the WhatsApp application on the iPad. After entering the phone number and receiving a one-time verification code (OTP), the account can be used independently on the iPad without being treated as a companion device from the main phone.
However, Meta emphasized that users still need an active phone number and can receive verification codes during the account registration process.
In addition to presenting self-registration for iPads, WhatsApp also updates the application's usage experience in vehicles through CarPlay and Android Auto.
The update allows users to listen to and reply to messages via voice commands, make voice calls, view call history, and access favorite contacts directly from the car's infotainment system screen.
With this update, WhatsApp functions on CarPlay and Android Auto are no longer limited to reading and replying to messages, but also support a more complete communication activity while driving. However, Meta has not explained the minimum requirements for devices, operating systems, or vehicles that support these new features.
WhatsApp also added support for managing PDF documents through integration with Adobe Acrobat on the web and desktop versions. Users can now open PDF files without having to download them first, then provide highlights and annotations directly from within the conversation.
Another update allows users to share songs that are being listened to from Apple Music or Spotify directly to WhatsApp Status. Contacts who see the Status can find out what music the user is playing.
Meta stated that all new features will be rolled out gradually starting July 22, 2026. However, the company has not revealed a specific schedule for when the update will be available to all users in various countries.
