JAKARTA - The government is considering the idea of flying doctors to speed up health services in remote areas. Helicopters are said to be one of the modes that can be used for a rapid health response unit.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the idea came up because Indonesia's territory is very wide, while health facilities are not evenly distributed.
"Why then did the idea of a flying doctor also emerge, the term flying because on several occasions we have traveled to all regions in Indonesia, indeed our country is very wide, the reach of facilities is not even," said Prasetyo at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Saturday, August 15.
According to Prasetyo, the concept is similar to a mobile dentist, but uses air mode for certain conditions and regions.
"In some countries, in some regions they also apply the same thing to health rapid response units, there are also those based on helicopters," he said.
Prasetyo emphasized that air mode does not mean it will be used in every village or sub-district.
The idea goes hand in hand with the improvement of health facilities.
Prasetyo said that as many as 66 hospitals have been completed this year and 20 of them are operational.
President Prabowo, he said, asked for the program to be accelerated because there were still around 350-plus hospitals that needed to be repaired.
The government has also started to improve a number of Puskesmas and accelerate the process of educating doctors.
Prasetyo has not mentioned the time for the flying doctor service.
