Google continues to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in the Google Photos service. This time, the company is preparing a new feature that allows users to edit photo metadata just by giving commands using natural language.
The feature will be part of Ask Photos, an AI-based service already available in Google Photos to help users search and group photo collections.
If officially released, users no longer have to manually change photo information because AI will do it based on the instructions given.
AI Can Change Photo Metadata
Metadata is information stored behind every digital photo.
The data typically includes:
the date and time of the shooting,
location of photo shooting,
the device used,
image resolution,
as well as various other technical information.
Until now, Google Photos only allows users to view the metadata, but has not provided an AI feature to change it.
Through the latest update, Google will introduce a new feature that allows metadata to be edited directly using AI.
Edit via Ask button
Based on the findings of Android Authority, the feature will work through the Ask button at the bottom of the Google Photos interface.
Currently, the button can be used to:
- search for photos using natural language,
clustering image collections,
find certain moments faster.
In the future, the same button will also be used to change information on photos.
For example, users simply say or type:
"Change the date of this photo to July 10, 2026."
"Change the location of the photo to Bandung."
"Make a caption for this photo."
AI will then process the request. If necessary, the system can ask follow-up questions to ensure the desired changes before applying them.
More Practical Than Manual Editing
Until now, users have to open the information menu for each photo to see the metadata. Just open the photo, tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner, then select the About menu to see all the stored information.
With the presence of AI features, the process is expected to be much faster because users can simply give instructions using voice or text.
Until now, Google has not officially activated this feature. However, various indications show that its development has entered the final stage and will likely be available through a Google Photos update in the near future.
When the feature becomes available, Google will reportedly display a notification or tooltip in the application explaining the new capabilities to users.
The addition of metadata editing capabilities shows that Google is increasingly making AI the center of the Google Photos experience. After previously being used for conversation-based photo search, image grouping, to visual editing, AI will now also help manage important information attached to each photo.
For users who have thousands of photos in the gallery, this feature has the potential to make it easier to manage digital archives, especially when the date or location information on an image is inaccurate. By using only voice or text commands, users can later update metadata without having to open and edit each photo manually.
