JAKARTA - Beijing has approved the establishment of the first space computing industry innovation center in the Chinese capital. This project will connect the space, computing, chip, and satellite industry chains to accelerate the development of the satellite internet.
According to a Xinhua report, Wednesday, June 3, citing Science and Technology Daily, the innovation center will also promote the Internet of Things or satellite IoT sector. Satellite IoT means a network of devices connected via satellite, not just through cellular towers or land cables.
Space computing itself is a technology that allows data to be processed directly in orbit, for example on satellites or space stations. So, data doesn't always have to be sent to Earth first to be analyzed.
This innovation center will focus on six research areas. Among them are heat-resistant and highly reliable space chips, high-performance satellite computing payloads, computing satellite platforms, large AI models that can work with limited power, cloud-based space-ground control networks, and space computing power services.
The center is expected to be officially launched by the end of June.
The project is jointly led by Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications or BUPT and a number of major companies in the space computing sector.
Dean of the School of Computer Science at BUPT, Wang Shangguang, said Beijing has the most complete aerospace and computing industrial chain in China.
According to Wang, Beijing is pooling rocket and satellite companies, developers of large AI models, as well as chip companies. The combination provides a strong foundation for the development of space computing.
This innovation center is positioned to connect rocket, satellite, chip companies, and large AI model developers in Beijing, while strengthening the development of satellite IoT.
