JAKARTA - Following in the footsteps of Telkomsel, cellular operator Indosat Ooredoo will soon launch its fifth generation or 5G network. Indosat is currently carrying out a 5G Operational Feasibility Test (ULO) in the 1800Mhz frequency band.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) Dedy Permadi, said Indosat had submitted the process of making a Certificate of Operation Eligibility (SKLO).

"Kominfo is processing the SKLO letter which will be issued by the Directorate General of Post and Information Technology (Ditjen PPI) on behalf of the Minister of Communication and Information," said Dedy when confirmed, Tuesday, June 8.

However, Dedy has not explained in detail when exactly the letter will be issued by the Kemenkominfo. Of course, this is quite good news, because Indosat is one step away from having a 5G network in Indonesia.

Previously, Indosat Ooredoo's Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications Steve Saerang admitted that his party had submitted the ULO 5G application since May 2021.

"In principle, Indosat Ooredoo is ready for 5G, according to our previous statement. We are 5G ready," Steve explained.

It should be noted that ULO itself must be implemented by cellular operators if they want to implement a 5G network in Indonesia.

There are three things that need to be observed at this stage, namely the suitability of equipment certificates, system testing and compatibility with other cellular technologies owned by the operator, and basic telephone services as well as multimedia services for internet access services on the mobile broadband network owned by the operator.

This means that if cellular operators deploying 5G networks do not pass the ULO stage, they will be subject to sanctions in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, because they have carried out telecommunications operations without permission from the government.

Apart from Indosat and Telkonsel, Smartfren also plans to roll out a 5G network. The cellular operator also acquired shares owned by the operator of fiber optic network infrastructure, PT Mora Telematika Indonesia (Moratelindo).
