JAKARTA - Following seven other platforms, Roblox officially stated its commitment to comply with Government Regulation (PP) Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Governance of Electronic Systems for Child Protection (PP Tunas).
Roblox is one of eight platforms with a high risk level in child protection in the digital space, among other seven platforms, namely Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, YouTube, and TikTok.
After a long discussion, the Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid finally revealed that Roblox had conveyed its commitment to comply with PP TUNAS.
In his commitment, Meutya said that Roblox has started implementing age verification for all users.
If users do not verify their age, then the chat feature or communication feature on the platform will be automatically disabled.
"So, this is important, that those who do not verify their age, then their chats will be turned off. Including the possibility that people over 16 years old do not verify their faces, he will also automatically turn off his communication features, and also restrict games to games that apply to small children," said Meutya in a press conference on Thursday, April 30.
According to the data provided, the number of Roblox users in Indonesia reached around 45 million, with around 23 million of them being children under the age of 16.
Because Roblox's character as a game platform, the government considers that a special approach is needed compared to social media, especially in terms of interaction and content.
"Since Roblox is a game, it is somewhat different from previous social media group friends, there are quite a lot of details that we have to discuss before we then assess that we consider this to be compliance with the Tunas PP," he said.
In addition to age verification, Roblox also implements a number of other features such as content restrictions, where the games that users can access will be adjusted to age groups, ranging from under 13 years old, 13-15 years old, to over 16 years old.
There is also control of potential addiction through the screen time feature that can be set by parents. With this feature, parents can limit the duration of the child's play directly.
"And in this case, it means that all eight platforms first, they have all completed their compliance. This is the first game rule, maybe in the world, because countries that delay account access usually only to social media," he said.
Meanwhile, Roblox's Vice President of Global Public Policy, Nicky Jackson Colaco, emphasized that the policy implemented in Indonesia is one of the most stringent globally.
"The steps we announced are among the strictest we have ever implemented anywhere in the world. This happened in Indonesia, after a series of long discussions with the Minister's team and Komdigi members," said Nicky.
He also explained that Roblox has launched two types of special accounts in Indonesia, namely Roblox Kids for ages 5-12 and Roblox Select for ages 13-15.
Both accounts are designed based on age and are adjusted to Indonesian norms and culture.
