Google, Apple, Microsoft And Mozilla Standardize Use Of Browser Extensions

JAKARTA - Four technology giants Google, Apple, Microsoft and Mozilla join hands in developing browser extensions. This feature is believed to facilitate the needs of users in surfing the Internet.

Previously there were only browser extensions Chrome, Firefox and Safari. However, in an effort to standardize browser extensions, the major tech giants formed the WebExtensions Community Group (WECG).

Launching the official WECG page, Sunday, June 6, the purpose of the formation of WECG is to make it easier for developers to create browser extensions. Where participating browser vendors want to define a consistent model of functionality, API, and permissions can go through this community.

"Our work will be guided by a well-defined set of HTML and W3C TAG design principles, compatibility, performance, security, privacy, portability, maintainability and behavior," explained the WECG team.

WECG also wants to improve the overall reliability of browser extensions by outlining an architecture that improves performance and security.

"Using the existing extension model and the APIs supported by Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Safari as a foundation, we will start by working on the specifications. We aim to identify commonalities, bring implementations into closer alignment, and chart a course for evolution." future," said the WECG team.

However, that doesn't mean that browsers will no longer introduce new APIs that support certain use cases. WECG also clarifies that, that their community will not determine every aspect of the web extension platform.

"We don't plan to define, standardize, or coordinate around signing or shipping extensions," the team said.

"Each browser vendor will continue to operate their extension store completely independently, with their own technical, review and editorial policies."

Therefore, WECG urges other browser makers to join this effort immediately. It is known, they will also ask for contributions from developers after revealing the first draft of the specifications.

It is hoped that with this community, money users who like to surf the internet can get better extensions for Mac, Windows, and other browsers.
