JAKARTA - The X social media platform announced a new policy targeting creators who upload videos of armed conflicts using artificial intelligence without labeling that the content was created with AI. This step is said to be an effort to limit the spread of misleading information in the midst of a war situation, where the flow of information becomes very crucial.
Head of Product X, Nikita Bier, on Tuesday, March 3 local time, stated that creators who violate it will be immediately suspended from the Creator Revenue Sharing monetization program for 90 days. If after the end of the sanction they continue to upload misleading AI content without labels, the account will be permanently removed from the revenue sharing program.
"During wartime, it is very important for the public to have access to authentic information from the field. With current AI technology, it is very easy to create content that can mislead people," Bier wrote on his official account on X.
"From now on, users who upload AI-generated armed conflict videos without including a disclosure that they were made with AI will be suspended from Creator Revenue Sharing for 90 days," he added.
The company said it would identify problematic content through a combination of generative content detection tools and a community-based fact-checking system, Community Notes. This mechanism has previously been used to provide additional context to posts deemed misleading.
The Creator Revenue Sharing program is designed to encourage creators to produce interesting content and be able to generate high traffic, in return for sharing advertising revenue. However, this scheme has since been criticized from the start because it is considered to encourage sensational content, clickbait, or uploads that provoke public anger in order to increase interaction.
A number of observers also highlighted that the requirements to be part of the program require creators to be X paid customer status, as well as content controls that are not considered to be completely strict.
However, this latest policy only targets AI content related to armed conflict. Outside the issue of war, the use of AI media to spread political misinformation or promote products deceptively in the influencer ecosystem is still untouched by the new rules.
Step X reflects the increasing pressure on digital platforms in the face of a wave of synthetic content. Generative AI technology makes the creation of fake videos or photos easier and cheaper. In the context of conflict, the impact can be widespread, ranging from public panic to manipulation of international opinion.
This policy is a signal that monetization is now more closely associated with information responsibility. However, the question is, is the threat of stopping cuan powerful enough to dampen the temptation of instant virality in the AI era? In the midst of a fast-paced attention economy, the narrative war seems to be not only in the battlefield, but also in the timeline.
