Jakarta - The decision of the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) to temporarily cut access to the Grok application has received support from the House of Representatives. Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the Golkar Party Faction, Nurul Arifin, assessed that this step is a form of the state's presence in protecting the public from the threat of misuse of artificial intelligence technology.

Nurul stated that the prevalence of false pornography content based on artificial intelligence (AI), especially non-consensual sexual deepfakes, has become a serious threat to women, children, and other vulnerable groups.

"I fully support the Ministry of Communication and Digital's decisive steps. Sexual deepfakes are not just a violation of ethics, but have entered the realm of human rights violations and gender-based violence in the digital space," said Nurul Arifin, Monday, January 12.

According to Nurul, the temporary termination of access to Grok is a proportionate step and in accordance with the authority of the government as regulated in the Minister of Communication and Information Regulation Number 5 of 2020 concerning Private Sector Electronic System Operators.

"Our regulations clearly require every digital platform to ensure that its technology does not facilitate prohibited content. If there is strong evidence that an application has the potential to be misused and endanger the public, then the state should not hesitate to act," he said.

As the Chairman of the Golkar Party's Opinion Gathering Media (MPO), Nurul also emphasized the importance of the responsibility of global platforms operating in Indonesia to comply with national laws and values of protecting the community.

"Technological innovation must be in line with social responsibility. International platforms such as X and its derivative products must respect Indonesian law and ensure user protection, not open the door to digital crime," he added.

Nurul encouraged that the clarification requested by the government to the X Platform be carried out openly and accompanied by a real commitment to strengthen the security system, content moderation, and mechanisms to prevent the misuse of AI.

"In the future, we also need to strengthen digital literacy and accelerate regulatory updates so that Indonesia is not always in a reactive position, but is ready to face the very rapid development of technology," concluded Nurul.

Previously, Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid stated that the temporary disconnection of access to Grok was carried out in order to protect the public from the risk of false AI-based pornographic content as well as a preventive measure against violations of the rights and dignity of citizens in the digital space.
