JAKARTA - Boston Dynamics has partnered with Google DeepMind in developing Atlas, the latest generation of humanoid robots. Through this collaboration, Boston Dynamics will utilize Google's Artificial Intelligence (AI) model.
This partnership was revealed by Hyundai, the majority owner of Boston Dynamics, at a press conference held at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Through this collaboration, Bostons Dynamics wants to develop robots that interact more naturally with humans.
As the first test subject, Atlas will adopt a basic AI model developed by Google DeepMind. The AI technology is believed to be able to make robots learn their physical experiences, face new situations independently, and execute commands with human-like thinking.
"We are working to integrate our cutting-edge AI basic model with the new Atlas robot, and aim to develop the most advanced robot model to meet human needs," said Carolina Parada, Senior Director of Robotics at Google DeepMind, quoted from TechCrunch on Tuesday, January 6.
The latest generation Atlas has joints that rotate 56 degrees freely and a human-sized hand equipped with tactile sensors. This hardware is designed to handle heavy tasks with the ability to lift loads of up to 50 kilograms and perform repetitive movements consistently.
This humanoid robot also has a 360-degree camera to monitor the movement of people around it. This camera is used to avoid collisions with objects or people around it. Boston Dynamics believes that the latest generation of Atlas that adopts AI will create a more friendly working environment.
In line with the adoption of Atlas in the workplace, Hyundai will send the humanoid robot to their factory in Savannah, Georgia. They will also open a special facility called the Robot Metaplant Application Center to train the mapping of robot movements. Training data from the factory will be used to improve Atlas' intelligence.
