JAKARTA - The French government is preparing a firm step to completely restrict the use of social media by children under the age of 15 starting in September 2026.

Launching the local media Le Monde, the draft has received direct support from President Emmanuel Macron, who stated that the French Parliament needs to immediately discuss the proposal starting January 2026.

"Many studies and reports now confirm the various risks caused by excessive use of digital screens by teenagers," the French draft law reads.

The draft law consists of two articles, namely a ban on the provision of social media services by platforms to children under the age of 15, and calls for a ban on the use of mobile phones in secondary schools.

The country passed a similar law in 2023, requiring social media platforms to get parental consent for children under 15 to create accounts.

However, following a stabbing incident at a school in eastern France last July, Macron pushed for regulation at the EU level to ban total access to social media for all children under the age of 15.

Meanwhile, the ban on the use of mobile phones, which had previously been applied to elementary and secondary school students in 2018, is reported to be expanded to high school students.

Currently, the bill will be submitted to the French Conseil d'État for legal review in the coming days.
