Android 17 Has Codename Cinnamon Bun

The latest leak confirms that Android 17 has an internal codename "Cinnamon Bun", as found in Android Canary's latest release code. Although Google has long stopped using the username publicly, the sweet naming tradition still continues to live in the company's internal development.

Android 16 has been released for a long time, and now Google is starting to develop its next generation, namely Android 17. Information about this operating system is still very limited. In August 2025, a leak called Android 17 using the codename Cinnamon Bun, continues the dessert naming pattern that Google has maintained internally.

Now, new evidence is emerging and further strengthens these claims. According to the Android Authority report, after tracing Android Canary build 2511, they found the mention of CINNAMON_BUN publicly for the first time in the Android code. In the Android.os. Build section, the name is listed as a valid version.

The CINNAMON_BUN is also recorded to have a version code 1000, number that is said to represent an internal API level. API level is a unique identity for each version of Android and is used to map features, API changes, and system behavior that application developers need to adapt.

Usually, Google raises the API level sequentially at each major release. Currently Android 16 is in API level 36, so Android 17 will most likely become a level 37 API when it reaches the Platform Stability stage next year. For the time being, the OS continues to use the placeholder code "100.000."

Although this confirmation makes it clear that the Android 17 codename does not change Google's public approach. Since Android 9 Pie in 2018, Google has stopped using the username officially for branding or marketing. The sweet name is now only used internally by the development team.

There are not many details regarding the features or major changes that will be present on Android 17. However, if you follow the previous release pattern, this operating system is likely to be introduced in June 2026 along with a series of Google I/O announcements.

For now, one thing is clear: 'Cinmon Bun' is indeed an internal identity of Android 17, continuing Google's hidden tradition that remains alive even though it is no longer announced to the public
