JAKARTA - Apple has officially expanded its Apple Wallet function by presenting a new feature called Digital ID, which allows users to store US passport data directly on their iPhone. This feature is designed to facilitate digital identity verification, especially at US domestic airports.

Previously, Apple Wallet had supported the storage of a state SIM or identity card (State ID) since 2022. Now, users can add digital passports as a new, more universal form of identity.

Through Digital ID, users can create digital versions of their passports on iPhone or Apple Watch. This feature will be first received by TSA (Transportation Security Administration) at more than 250 airports across the US, to verify identity during domestic flights.

However, Apple insists that Digital ID has not been able to replace physical passports and cannot be used for international travel, for example, when crossing between the US and Canada.

Apple emphasizes that this feature prioritizes user security and privacy. All data is encrypted and inaccessible to Apple, including which location, time, or party is requesting the identity data.

The verification process is carried out biometrically through Face ID or Touch ID, and only data relevant to transactions will be shared with the applicant.

"Since presenting a digital SIM in 2022, we see how users like the convenience of having a direct ID on their device," Jennifer Bailey, VP of Apple Pay & Apple Wallet. Now with Digital ID, more users across the country can feel the same comfort and security using data from their passports.

To create a Digital ID, users are enough:

Open the Wallet app on iPhone.

Press the Add (+) button select Driver's License or ID Card You select Digital ID.

Following the instructions on the screen, including:

Scan a physical passport using the camera and NFC iPhone.

Taking selfies for identity verification.

Once completed, Digital ID will be saved on Wallet automatically and can be accessed by pressing the side button twice, just like Apple Pay transactions.

The Digital ID feature was first announced in WWDC 2025 as part of the iOS 26 update. Unlike previous digital SIM programs limited to several states, Digital ID can be used by all US passport holders, making it a more inclusive digital identity solution.

Apple hasn't announced an international launch schedule yet, but it's seen as the start of a new era of cross-device digital identity, which combines the convenience, security and privacy of Apple's ecosystem.
