BRIN Predicts Water Availability At IKN Using Satellite Data

JAKARTA The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) conducted a study to predict the availability of water in the National Capital City (IKN) of the Archipelago. This study was conducted by utilizing satellite data.

This study uses an artificial neural network (ANN) approach to produce accurate predictions models. From the results of the study, BRIN stated that the availability of water in IKN really needs to be seriously anticipated.

The ANN model shows that the percentage of water availability in IKN and its surroundings is divided into several categories, namely high water (HW) of 0.51 percent, water vegetation (VW) of 20.41 percent, and non-water (NW) of 79.08 percent.

This data is in line with public concerns since IKN was built. Many have stated that water will be a crisis in the area around IKN. This is also in accordance with the many talks about local residents fighting for clean water.

"If it is not anticipated from the start, massive development in the region can be faced with the risk of a water crisis," said BRIN Center for Climate and Atmospheric Research, Laras Toersilowati, quoted on Monday, September 22.

Laras also explained that this research began with the phenomenon of increasing climate change in urban areas due to urbanization, changes in land cover, and increasing emissions. To get accurate results, BRIN deliberately turned satellite data into the main instrument.

The results of its predictions are believed to support monitoring of climate change in detail. With satellite data, researchers can see climate change patterns, both in terms of space and time.

"Satellite data is not only a matter of numbers or maps, but also a basis for the government in making strategic decisions so that city development in Indonesia remains sustainable," he added.
