JAKARTA - Google has finally fulfilled its promise from 2017 to remove the fence from the photo. With the new AI tools on Google Photos and Gemini, users can now remove fences and other obstacles from their images. The results are pretty good, with tools on Google Photos (currently only available in the US) that retain the original resolution, while tools on Gemini (are globally available) compress the final image.
Remember Google's old promise to get rid of the fence in your photo? Back at Google I/O 2017, the company showed off a demo that looked like magic: a tool that can remove the chain fence from a photo. Over the years, the feature has become a joke. But now, with the power of modern AI, the promise of removing the fence in the eight-year-old Google Photos has finally come true.
Thanks to two new "Help Me Edit" AI tools on new Google Photos and Gemini's new Nano Banana you can now remove various types of obstacles from your images, including that annoying fence. The results are quite impressive.

Abolition Of Fences In Google Photos Available For US Users
For those with Google Pixel 10 in the US, the process is very simple. You just need to open Google Photos, find images with fences, tap "Help Me Edit," and tell what you want to remove. AI will take care of the rest, often with very clean results.
This tool can remove thin and simple fences, even large complex fences from animal photos. In many cases, this tool will not leave visible artifacts. You can still expect less perfect results in some pictures, especially in certain lighting conditions. However, overall, this feature works quite well.
Global Users Can Remove Fences From Images Using Gemini
But what if you don't have a Pixel 10 or live outside the US? This is where Gemini Nano Banana's role. The features available on the Gemini app can also remove fences from your image, and are available globally. The process is similar: you upload photos and ask Gemini to remove the fence. The results are also very impressive, with AI doing great work in handling everything from complex bird cages to large wooden fences.
However, there are some differences. The Help Me Edit' tools in Google Photos are more optimized for professional-level editing. This means the tool retains original image resolution and avoids creative freedom which Gemini Nano Banana sometimes takes on backgrounds or other elements. Gemini tools also compress the final image, which is not ideal for high-quality photos.
