JAKARTA The volume of dark data has increased in Indonesia. This finding was revealed by Hitachi Vantara, a company in the field of data storage and hybrid cloud management, through the Data Infrastructure Survey.

This survey involved 1,200 respondents globally and 50 of them came from the industry. These respondents come from diverse industries, ranging from health and life sciences as much as 28 percent, manufacturing as much as 20 percent, and Information Technology (IT) as much as 18 percent.

In the report, it was recorded that 24 percent of IT respondents in Indonesia identified their data as dark data. This data refers to the information collected, but is not used to generate business insights.

This figure is far above the global average which only reaches 10 percent. This type of data is considered to increase the risk of the company's security. If data is allowed to accumulate without being used, the data becomes vulnerable and can threaten security.

In addition, companies can experience other losses such as soaring or higher storage costs. With the increasing volume of dark data, data storage needs are expected to increase by 29.6 to in the next two years.

To overcome the dark data challenges, companies need to take strategic steps, one of which is to build a solid data governance framework. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based analytics can also be used to protect dark data.

Ming Sunadi, Country Managing Director of Indonesia Hitachi Vantara, stated that data-oriented organizations have the potential to develop. However, these companies also need to face their challenges well.

"Data-oriented organizations and prioritizing governance and analytics are in a better position to encourage innovation and remain competitive in the growing digital landscape," Ming said on Wednesday, August 27.

Hitachi Vantara advises companies to collaborate with many parties. In line with the survey results, most IT leaders in Asia need to be supported by third parties in areas such as hardware, data storage and processing solutions, software, and experts.
