JAKARTA - The parent of a 16-year-old teenager who died of suicide in California, United States, sued the company OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman.
In a lawsuit filed in San Francisco state courts, Matthew and Maria Raine, who are the parents of the victim, Adam Raine, accused the AI company of launching a GPT-4o version of ChatGPT without adequate protection, prompting their son to commit suicide.
They said that the AI chatbot validated Adam's suicide thoughts, and even provided detailed information about methods to injure himself, teach him how to smuggle alcohol, and hide evidence of attempted suicide.
Through the lawsuit, Adam's parents tried to hold OpenAI accountable for the deaths and violations of the product safety law, and asked for unspecified monetary compensation.
An OpenAI spokesperson said the company was saddened by Adam's death and that ChatGPT includes protection such as directing people into crisis relief channels.

"Although this protection works best in short and general exchanges, over time we realized that this protection can sometimes become less reliable in long interactions where some parts of model security training can decline," a spokesperson said.
However, the company insists that it is preparing parental controls and exploring how to connect users with mental health professionals.
