Meet Komdigi, Technology Practitioners Highlight The Importance Of Digital ID For The Indonesian People

JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, held a meeting with a number of technology and internet practitioners, in discussing issues related to policies, governance, and the direction of the development of the digital technology sector in the country.

The meeting discussed biometric-based Digital ID as a solution to the old credentials in the form of a Population Identification Number (NIK) and a cellular number that is considered to have been compromised.

According to practitioners, Digital ID is one of the important foundations to build public trust in the digital space.

Not only that, Digital ID is also believed to be able to suppress and eradicate digital crimes based on identity manipulation, including online gambling issues (judol), illegal online loans (pinjol), and others.

In addition, discussions also continue regarding the need for communication and consolidation channels that are independent and open to the public to provide input related to telecommunications and digital regulations in Indonesia.

Other issues that were also discussed included the need for regulatory unification for the management of DNS and IP Address, Indonesia's position in the global discourse, such as the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and artificial intelligence regulation (AI).

Nezar responded to a number of things that became a concern in the meeting with the Indonesian internet and digital practitioners.

According to him, a number of factors that also influence a number of domestic policies are geopolitical and global competition, and for the domestic context, including the amount of research budget allocation.

"We continue to strive so that our digital talents, as well as the technology research, can increasingly have adequate resources by involving multi-party parties, including from industry, academics, technical communities to civil society," he concluded.
