JAKARTA Microsoft has done various ways to prevent Windows users from switching from the Edge browser. This action angered Opera and sued Microsoft for alleged anti-competitive practices in Brazil.
In the lawsuit filed, Opera accused Microsoft of using 'manipulative design tactics'. This is based on Microsoft's actions that ignore various choices of default browsers for Windows users.
"Microsoft always thwarts browser competition on Windows," said Opera General Advisor Aaron McParlan, quoted from The Verge. "First, browsers like Opera don't have access to important pre-installation features. Then, Microsoft inhibits the user's ability to download and use alternative browsers."
Not only that, Microsoft also limits platforms from opening PDFs with Outlook and Teams. In addition, links from various Windows features, such as Search or Widget, will always be open on Edge even if users use other browsers.
Opera also highlighted the use, "disturbing banners and messages that prevent users from downloading alternative browsers while they are looking for such browsers on Edge." All of these practices are considered to hinder user rights and freedoms.
Opera deliberately sued Microsoft in Brazil because one of their main markets is the country. Opera notes that its browser is the third most popular search engine with millions of active users.

"This complaint, which concerns the practices implemented globally by Microsoft, provides an opportunity for Brazil to become a leader on this international issue," Aaron said.
Through this lawsuit, Opera demanded several solutions from Microsoft. They want permission for PC manufacturers to load alternative built-in browsers. Opera also demands the termination of consumer blocking to download other browsers.
They also want Microsoft to end the 'dark pattern' or incorrect actions that were taken intentionally to push users to Edge. Opera also wants Microsot practices that require OEMs to provide S-mode devices to be banned.
