JAKARTA The Indian government issued a blocking order against dozens of film and serial streaming services accused of promoting 'bully' content. This order targets 25 applications.

This is the most violent digital action carried out by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India. This decision was also made based on the 2000 Information Technology Law and the 2021 IT Rules.

The order to block dozens of these banned applications came after the National Commission for Child Rights Protection and the Parliamentary Standing Committee voiced concerns. They briefly discussed adult content circulating without protection.

There are a number of applications that provide adult content as entertainment, such as Ullu and ALTT. Of the 25 blocked applications, ten of them provide application purchase offers through the Google Play Store and App Store.

According to Appfigures data, according to TechCrunch, all of these applications contributed cumulative revenue of 5.7 million US dollars or around Rp93 billion with nearly 105 million downloads. This revenue is driven by low service costs.

The Indian government has contacted Google Play and Apple App Store regarding the circulation of apps with adult content. They asked the two app stores to limit their streaming services because some apps have millions of subscribers who are still active today.

Currently, the ALTT application is no longer available in popular app stores. The website is also inaccessible in most Indian ISPs. However, the Ullu app can still be accessed via Google Play India. The platform just cannot be downloaded on the App Store.
