JAKARTA - Samsung has just shared a technical explanation of how they managed to make the Galaxy Z Fold 7 the thinst book-style folding phone they have ever released.

With a thickness of just 8.9mm when folded and 4.2mm when it opened, Fold 7 marked Samsung's big step in competing directly with brands like HONOR and OPPO in the ultra-thin foldable phone market.

In a recent post in Samsung Newsroom, the company revealed that the combination of slimmer hinges, thinner screens, and new camera systems contributed greatly to this achievement. Samsung said that Fold 7 is now almost 50% thinner than the first-generation Galaxy Fold.

One of the important elements in this new design is hinges. Compared to Fold 6, the Fold 7 hinge is made 27% slimmer and 43% lighter, with rotational and support components redesigned to make it thinner.

This new design also allows the wider use of the wingplate, so that the screen becomes flatter when opened with smoother and almost invisible folds (creases).

Despite its smaller size, Samsung ensures that hinge resistance is maintained. In an interview with the Android Authority, they stated that this new hinge is stronger and more resistant to thousands of folds, even exceeding the Fold 6 durability which has been able to last more than 200,000 open-close cycles.

Some reports did say the Fold 7 demo unit could not be evenly opened, but Samsung said this was not a common problem because it was not found in their testing units or other reviewers.

From the screen side, Samsung managed to reduce the thickness of the panel by optimizing the internal structure of the screen and using new materials. In addition, the panel structure is also redesigned to support a slimmer profile.

One of the significant steps not mentioned in the latest uploads but previously revealed is the removal of the digitizer layer. As a result, Fold 7 no longer supports the use of S Pen like its predecessor.

Another major change exists in the main rear camera system. Fold 7 now features a 200MP wide-angle camera redesigned with a new, much thinner actuator. This actuator is a component that physically drives the lens, and through structural re-engineering, Samsung managed to put it in a much slimmer body.

With this series of technical innovations, Samsung places Fold 7 as one of the thinst foldable phones in the market today. This development shows that competition between manufacturers has now reached a millimeter precision level of even a fraction of a millimeter in order to provide a premium experience in a more concise form.
