JAKARTA - The Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) has awarded contracts to OpenAI and xAI to develop and deploy AI capabilities across a range of defense missions.
With each company's contract worth US$200 million (approximately IDR 3.26 trillion), the Department of Defense (DoD) is leveraging the technology and talent of their AI companies.
This means OpenAI and xAI will help develop agentic AI workflows—AI-based autonomous work systems—across a range of domains, from the battlefield to strategic data processing.
"Leveraging available commercial solutions in an integrated capabilities approach will accelerate the use of advanced AI as part of our joint mission-critical tasks," said Chief Digital and AI Officer Doug Matty.
The CDAO will provide access to the latest general-purpose generative AI (GenAI) models to the Joint Combatant Commands, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the Joint Staff.
This access is provided through the Army's Enterprise Large Language Model Workspace, powered by Ask Sage, as well as through various internal AI platforms such as Advancing Analytics (Advana), Maven Smart System, and Edge Data Mesh.

These initiatives aim to integrate AI directly into the DoD's daily workflows and data environments.
In addition, the DoD is also partnering with the US General Services Administration (GSA) to expand the distribution of AI technology across federal agencies.
This collaboration enables the US government to leverage whole-of-government buying power to support national AI computing production and infrastructure.
