JAKARTA - Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, has officially entered into a major partnership with Talent Energy to supply electricity from nuclear energy to AWS's data center. This deal marks Amazon's great step in ensuring a stable supply of carbon-free energy to support its cloud operational growth and artificial intelligence.

In an official statement on Wednesday (US time), Talent Energy announced that it would supply up to 1,920 megawatts of electricity from the Susquehanna nuclear plant in Pennsylvania to AWS. This long-term agreement will last until 2042, guaranteeing long-term revenue for Talent and a sustainable energy supply for Amazon.

This partnership is not just a matter of electricity supply. The two companies also agreed to explore the construction of a new Small Modular Reactor (SMR) in the Talent operational area in Pennsylvania and increase the capacity of existing generators.

The move is in line with the increasing trend of electricity demand in the US, which has increased for the first time in two decades. This need is driven by the exponential growth of data centers and the development of artificial intelligence (AI).

"We are making the largest private sector investment in state history for US$20 billion to carry 1,250 high-skill employment opportunities and economic benefits, as well as working with Talent Energy to supply our infrastructure with carbon-free energy," said Kevin Miller, Vice President of the AWS Global Data Centers. , quoted by VOI from Reuters.

Market Impact

This deal immediately had a positive impact on the stock market. Talent Energy shares reportedly rose nearly 8% in pre-market trading.

Amazon is not the only tech giant to take this path. Earlier this month, Constellation Energy also reached an agreement with Meta Platforms to extend the operational life of nuclear reactors in Illinois over the next 20 years.
