JAKARTA OpenAI plans to reduce the share of revenue distributed to Microsoft as part of the restructuring process. This is known according to a report from The Information on Tuesday, May 6.
The ChatGPT maker recently scrapped a massive restructuring plan and ensured that the nonprofit parent remained in control, which could limit CEO Sam Altman's power over the company.
In the financial projections shared with investors, OpenAI revealed that the percentage of revenue distributed to Microsoft will fall by at least half before the end of the decade.
Currently, based on existing deals, OpenAI shares 20% of its revenue with Microsoft until 2030. However, according to The Information report, OpenAI has informed investors that it will only share 10% of revenue with commercial partners including Microsoft by 2030.
Microsoft is said to still want to maintain access to OpenAI technology after 2030.
Big Restructuring And Investment In AI
In January 2025, Microsoft changed some of the main provisions in the deal with OpenAI, following a strategic partnership between Microsoft, Oracle, and SoftBank Group Japan to build an AI data center worth up to $500 billion in the United States.

Microsoft said it had "two-way revenue sharing agreements" with OpenAI, and the main elements of their partnership continued into 2030.
"We continue to work closely with Microsoft and hope to immediately complete the details of this recapitalization," an OpenAI spokesperson told The Information.
Microsoft declined to comment on the report, while OpenAI has yet to respond to Reuters requests outside working hours.
OpenAI's decision to cut revenue sharing on Microsoft could impact relations between the two companies and long-term investment strategies. This restructuring shows that OpenAI wants to be more independent, although it still needs support from Microsoft.
