Apple Uses New Chips From AWS For AI Model Pre-training

JAKARTA Amazon Web Services (AWS) held AWS re:Invent 2024 on Tuesday, December 3. At the event, Apple's Senior Learning Machine and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Director Benoit Dupin was seen present.

According to a CNBC report, Dupin is here to reveal that it has used AI chips specifically from AWS in some of its cloud services. Apple is also evaluating Amazon's latest use of the AI chip to train the Apple Intelligence model.

In fact, the use of Amazon-made chips is nothing new for Apple. The company has used several AWS chips, such as Graviton and Inferntia, more than a decade ago.

Both of these chips are used to improve the performance of its systems and platforms, such as Siri, App Store, Apple Music, Apple Maps, and much more. According to Apple, chips from AWS have increased platform efficiency by up to 40 percent, surpassing chips from Intel and AMD.

"We have a strong relationship, and the infrastructure is reliable, definite, and capable of serving our customers around the world," said Dubin.

Dubin also revealed the latest AI chip model the company is currently evaluating. He said that this chip was dubbed Trainium2. Apple hopes that this chip can increase efficiency by up to 50 percent in pre-training.

This chip will only be used for AI model pre-training. Apple will not use Trainium2 to improve existing features in Apple Intelligence. The reason is, Apple Intelligence features use Apple's Private Cloud Compute platform.
