JAKARTA - Floods and landslides in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), have damaged a number of telecommunications infrastructure. PT Telkom Indonesia Tbk moved quickly and immediately made improvements.

"The impact of the decline in communication services occurred in almost all districts (in NTT-red)", Telkom's Vice President for Corporate Communication, Pujo Pramono, in his statement, Wednesday, April 7.

According to Pujo, service disruption occurred due to the breakdown of the fiber optic network for the Maumere-Larantuka segment, following previously the same thing that happened to the Kupang-Soe fiber optic segment. The breakdown of the fiber optic network was due to landslides and broken bridges due to extreme weather conditions.

To solve this problem, now Telkom has sent technicians to various network locations affected by landslides for immediate repairs. However, the terrain is quite difficult to reach due to the broken bridge and the condition of the affected network, so it takes time for repairs.

"We also sent technician assistance from Denpasar to speed up network repairs to return to normal soon", he added.

Pujo added that Telkom will continue to monitor the service repair process and alert technicians to secure services in other NTT areas. Telkom is also preparing a temporary alternative route to speed up service recovery.

"Currently, Telkomsel has taken quick steps to restore services, one of which is by mobilizing Mobile Backup Power (MBP) or generators to BTS locations that require electric power supply support", he continued.

For now, people in 22 disaster-affected districts in NTT can still enjoy the Telkomsel network. Power, voice, and SMS services can be done, but there is a decline in service quality.

Previously, it was reported, Seroja Tropical Cyclone which was very extreme caused disasters in various areas in NTT from Lembata to Kupang. The death toll reached 124 people, damaged buildings and infrastructure including telecommunications.

Seroja Tropical Cyclone causes floods, landslides, tidal waves, hurricanes, and heavy rains. The disaster response team is still carrying out the evacuation process.
