Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has joined TikTok, a short video social media platform owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance. Trump took this step ahead of the US election in November. Ironically, Trump has tried to ban this application while serving as president.

According to a report by Politico, who first reported this news, Trump posted a video of the launch on his TikTok account on Saturday night, June 1. The video shows Trump greeting fans at the Ultimate Fighting Championship event in Mexico, New Jersey.

The account with the name "President Donald J. Trump" and the address @realdonaldtrump had more than 450,000 followers at 08:00 GMT.

ByteDance is currently filing a lawsuit against US laws that took effect in April, requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok no later than January next year or facing a ban. The White House stated that it wanted to end China's based holdings for national security reasons, but did not want a ban on TikTok.

TikTok has argued that it will not share US user data with the Chinese government and has taken substantial steps to protect the privacy of their users.

Trump's attempt to ban TikTok in 2020 when he served as president was blocked by the courts. In March, Trump stated that the platform was a national security threat, but also that the ban on him would harm some young people and would only strengthen Meta Platforms' Facebook, which he has strongly criticized.

Meanwhile, ahead of the re-election campaign, President Joe Biden also joined the app in February.
