JAKARTA - Dell Technologies launched a suite of PCs equipped with AI technology supported by Qualcomm processors and announced new servers supporting the latest chips from Nvidia. This PC will be available on the market starting in the second half of 2024.

The announcement took place at an event in Las Vegas on Monday, May 20 with the aim of maintaining momentum in the lucrative AI server market and preparing for PC's market recovery this year after a post-pandemic order drop.

The AI-capable PC from Dell will be equipped with Snapdragon X series chips from Qualcomm which have a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) dedicated to processing complex AI tasks. Two of the five new PCs can be ordered starting Monday, while the rest will be available in the coming months.

This launch coincides with the annual Build event of Microsoft, where Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella introduced PC "Copilot+" involving Dell, Qualcomm, Intel, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) as partners of its creators.

Qualcomm shares rose nearly 2% to record highs while Dell's stock fell by about 2.6%.

In addition, Dell also launched a new server compatible with the Blackwell chip from Nvidia. This new server offers liquid cooling technology, in contrast to air conditioning that tends to consume more power. Arthur Lewis, president of the Dell infrastructure solution group, said that Nvidia-based servers from Dell are the fastest-increased product in the company's history.

Expenditures for AI servers are expected to exceed $33 billion by 2024, according to research firm International Data Corporation (IDC). With significant amounts of spending emerging from small companies that are still in the early stages of adopting new technologies, Lewis said Dell did not expect AI investments to significantly affect the company's spending on traditional servers.

This is different from the wider market that has seen uncertain demand for traditional servers as companies prioritize spending on fast AI servers.

Dell will report quarterly earnings on May 30, with analysts expecting PCs and AI servers to help demand for company products.
