JAKARTA - Tired of vacationing and staying at hotels with sea or mountain views? If so, start saving money because if nothing gets in the way, you can feel the thrill of having a vacation and staying at a hotel like never before.

Not on earth, but in outer space. Yes, if all plans go well, the first space hotel is slated to open in 2027 or just six years from now.

This idea originated from a company from California, the Gateway Foundation, which launched a cruise ship-style hotel concept that can serve above the earth's atmosphere in 2019.

Consisting of 24 modules that are connected by an elevator shaft that forms a rotating wheel, this hotel will orbit above the earth. This idea was later matured further.

The construction was carried out by Orbital Assembly Cooperation, a construction company run by a former pilot and chief secretary of the Gateway Foundation, John Blincow. The project also has the official name Voyager Station.

In an interview with CNN, Blincow said the COVID-19 pandemic caused several delays. However, he hopes that development can start in 2026 and be realized in 2027.

"We are trying to make the public realize that this golden age of space travel is coming soon. It is coming. It is coming fast", Blincow said.

The appearance of the hotel may convey an interior feel no different from an Earth-bound luxury hotel, with just a few extraordinary views that are quite specific.

Tim Alatorre, the hotel's design architect, said he and his team wanted to take a slice of the earth into space, through warm suites and chic bars and restaurants. Guests may be in outer space, but they can still enjoy the usual bed and bathroom.

That doesn't mean that hotels will ignore the novelty of being in outer space altogether. There are plans to serve traditional space food, such as freeze-dried ice cream at the hotel restaurant.

Plus there will be recreational activities on offer, with the selling power of doing something you can't do on earth.

"Because of its lightweight and reduced gravity, you will be able to jump higher, be able to lift objects, be able to run in ways you cannot on Earth", said Alatorre.

Space tourism is a hot topic, and several companies are trying to make it happen, from Virgin Galactic to Elon Musk's SpaceX. SpaceX's StarShip system can help launch the Voyager Station.

"We cannot call SpaceX our partner, but in the future, we look forward to working with them", Blincow said during a recent live event.

For now, space hotels don't advertise room rates but expect them to come with a hefty price tag. Virgin Galactic, for example, plans to launch passengers into sub-orbital space for $ 250,000 per person, per trip.

However, the team behind Voyager Station hopes that ultimately staying at the hotel is the same as a trip on a cruise ship or a trip to Disneyland.

"The ultimate goal, to create a spaceship culture where people go to space, and live in space, and work in space and they want to be in space. And we believe that there is a demand for that", said Alatorre 2019 ago.
