Beware Of Illegal Film Phishing Streaming, Here's How To Overcome It!

JAKARTA - The 96th Academy Awards, which award the best films of 2023, took place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on March 10.

This Oscar event then significantly increased public interest in the nominated films. This phenomenon certainly does not escape the attention of online fraudsters.

The criminals will take advantage of this growing curiosity, by creating phishing websites that promise free access to these popular films. To that end, Kaspersky will describe the forms of fraud that take advantage of the opportunities of this event, among others:

Fake streaming websites

In this case, fraudsters will create fake streaming websites that promise access to these Oscar films. To gain access that is considered "free", users are tricked into signing a subscription by providing their credit card information.

Unfortunately, after entering personal details, users do not receive access to the film, and vice versa, their personal information falls into the hands of the fraudster.

Downloading fake films

Some websites that offer popular movie downloads can also be phishing traps. These sites may offer some download options for a film, but clicking the link doesn't start downloading.

On the other hand, users are transferred to another page full of fraud, such as giving counterfeit money or lottery of gifts. Involvement with these pages can cause the loss of personal data and financial assets.

To avoid such phishing, Kaspersky shared some simple steps that would help you:

1. Verify the validity of the website. Before streaming or downloading movies, always check the credibility of the website, or use a trusted platform recommended by a valid source

2. Be careful of offers that are too good to come true. If a site offers free access to movies that are currently showing in theaters or have just been released, it's likely a scam. When access to a free' movie requires including bank details
