JAKARTA - On Thursday, 11 JUANUari CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, met with the leader of the Republican faction in the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, on Capitol Hill. The two discussed the risk of artificial intelligence, the office of DPR members said and by Altman himself.

US President Joe Biden's Democratic administration has urged legislators to regulate artificial intelligence, but the polarized US Congress, where Republicans control the House of Representatives and Democrats have a majority in the Senate, has yet to make significant progress in passing effective regulations.

The rise of artificial intelligence has raised a number of concerns, including the fear that this technology could be used to disrupt democratic processes, increase fraud, or cause job loss, among other losses. Europe is ahead of the US in terms of artificial intelligence regulation, with legislators there designing AI-related rules.

"We meet to discuss promises and risks of artificial intelligence and other technologies. Faction leaders believe that Congress should encourage innovation, help maintain our competitive advantages, and continue to pay attention to potential risks," said a statement from Mike Johnson's office.

Altman told reporters that they discussed "a way to balance this huge profit potential and find ways to reduce the risk," adding that he "wait with enthusiasm what the legislative process will do."

Microsoft-backed OpenAI was founded as an open source nonprofit, before co-founder Altman switched to a limited profit structure in 2019.

In November, Altman said that Microsoft would take a non-voting position as an observer on the company's board.

OpenAI dismissed Altman on November 17 for no detailed reason, which raised concerns among investors and employees. However, he was restored a few days later with the promise of a new council.

In October, Biden signed an executive order demanding an artificial intelligence system developer that poses risks to US national security, economy and public safety to share security test results with the federal government. The order goes beyond the voluntary commitments made by artificial intelligence companies this year.
