JAKARTA - On Friday, November 10, the European Commission announced that Facebook owners Meta Platforms Inc., and social media companies Snap were given a deadline of December 1 to provide further information on the steps they took to protect children from illegal and harmful content.

Demand for information about the steps taken by these companies to increase protection against children comes a day after similar messages from the European Union to Alphabet and TikTok's YouTube.

Last month, the Commission also sent urgent orders to companies, including Meta, X, and TikTok, to detail the steps taken to address the spread of terrorism-related content, violent content, and hate speech on their platforms.

The Commission has opened an investigation into these companies if they are not satisfied with the response given.

Within the framework of a new online content regulation known as the Digital Services Act (DSA) recently in effect, large online platforms are required to take more steps in dealing with illegal and harmful content or facing fines of up to 6% of their global turnover.
